Ideas for an Algerian Themed Football Party
The Maghreb region of northern Africa includes Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia and Libya, and all include certain common cultural influences. In fact, at one stage the first three were one nation. For the sake of throwing a great party, I hope nobody will take offence if we "blur the boundaries" a little...
Algeria specifically has a rich cultural history. The first known inhabitants were the Berber tribesmen, since which time there have been invasions by Romans, Arabs (bringing their culture and Islam) the Turkish Ottoman Empire, and the French, each leaving behind a little of their culture and cuisine.

Food for an Algeria Themed PartyThe food of Algeria is full of flavour and well-spiced. There is a love of sweet pastries, probably originally introduced by the Turks. Spiced, roast lamb with couscous, served with a variety of fresh vegetables could be considered the national dish.
The use of spice may not be as intense as in neighbouring Morocco, but there are many similar influences, and to some extent you could get away with borrowing dishes from any of the other Maghreb countries if you so wished.

Serve these dishes with couscous for an Algerian-themed dinner party.
Drink for an Algeria Themed PartyDespite being a predominantly moslem country, thanks to its French influence Algeria does produce and export some wines - mainly red and rosé. Tracking them down outside North Africa isn't easy, unfortunately...However, if you find a good source, please let us know. For a non-alcoholic alternative, strong black coffee and Mint Tea are both popular, as are fruit juices and - most bizarrely - Irn-Bru , imported all the way from Scotland!
Theming your partyHere are some photos of a party we threw - actually, it was Moroccan themed, not Algerian, but we're pretty sure nobody would argue!
