The Portuguese explorer Fernão do Pó is believed to be the first European to discover part of what is now Equatorial Guinea in 1472. The area was then colonised by Portugal, but subsequently ceded to Spain in the eighteenth century in exchange for territory in the American continent, after which it became known as the "Territorios Españoles del Golfo de Guinea Ecuatorial", and from 1926 to 1959 as "Spanish Guinea".

In September 1968 Equatorial Guinea finally gained its independence. Although one of the smallest nations in Africa, it is relatively wealthy, especially since the recent discovery of petroleum reserves.

As a footballing nation, Equatorial Guinea has never enjoyed huge success - they have never qualified for the World Cup finals nor the finals of the African Cup of Nations, until 2012 when they were joint hosts with Gabon.

Food for an Equatorial Guinea Themed Party

The main foods are cassava root, bananas, rice, and yams. Peanuts, avocados, pumpkins and other squashes are popular. The mainly vegetarian diet is supplemented with fish, chicken and duck, particulalry on special occasions. Dishes such as Chicken Yassa Casserole (popular in Nigeria) and Jollof (an "all in one" dish with chicken, rice and vegetables in a tomato-based sauce, very simlilar to Kedjenou from the Ivory Coast) are popular throughout West Africa, and could certainly be served at an Equatorial Guinea Themed Party. To be honest, Equatorial Guinea is one of Africa's smallest nations, both in terms of land mass and population, so there aren't that many "signature dishes"; many other recipes from West Africa can therefore be used for your event, but the most suitable would probably be the following:

Drink for an Equatorial Guinea Party

Palm wine and malamba (an alcoholic drink made from sugar cane) are both popular, but pretty much impossible to get hold of in many parts of the world, so if you can't obtain these we suggest you just do your own thing!

Unfortunately we are not able to find a reliable source for Equatorial Guinea international shirts at this time. Their home kit is all red, while their away kit is all white.
