Ideas for a Mexican Themed Football Party
Mexicans love a Fiesta! The 5th of May (Cinco de Mayo) is a big national celebration day in Mexico, in remembrance of their historic victory over the French in 1862 (in a battle, not at football!). A lot of the ideas on this page are borrowed from the traditions of Cinco de Mayo, and adapted to give you some ideas for a Mexican Football Party.
At a Mexican fiesta, the colours are always incredibly bright. Bright scarlet reds, lime greens and vivid sky blues often feature together in colour schemes that would make your head spin (especially after a few tequilas!). As red and green also feature in the national flag, they have to be the colours to go for! For a fiesta, Mexicans will decorate their houses with many home-made items made of brightly coloured tissue paper, which is always a fun activity you can get children involved in.
To create an authentic Mexican party atmosphere, have some Mexican Mariachi Music playing in the background (not during the game though!).

Food for a Mexican Themed PartyMexican food isn't all exactly like the recipes we expect in a "Mexican" restaurant, which is richer and has a lot more meat in than you would expect on the average Mexican's dining table. Mexican restaurant food is more like "special occasion" Mexican cuisine, but that's fine - a football party IS a special occasion!
That said, I cannot vouch for the authenticity of all of these recipes. Some I know for sure have been simplified, and the volume of chillies reduced significantly in at least one case! But authentic or not, give them a go, because they're all delicious!
Drink for a Mexican Themed PartyNow, here's a choice. Mexican beer or Tequila? And if you say "Tequila", cocktails or slammers? The vast majority of Mexican beers - such as Dos Equis, Sol, Corona , Estrella and Bohemia - are of the pilsner type, and when the day's hot and the beer's cold, they go down a treat! As for Tequila, this drink made from the fermented juice of the blue agave plant was North America's first mass-produced spirit, with the first tequila factory being established as early as 1600! There is an almost endless list of cocktails made with tequila, so feel free to try one or two out!
